How to Build a Welding Table?
If you are looking for a simple welding project, you may want to consider building your own welding table. The welding table must be able to absorb heat and not catch fire or warp while you are working. Designing and building your own welding table will allow you to design a part that fits your work area perfectly and is cheaper than buying a pre-made model.
The basic tools required to build a welding table are nothing special, and you probably already have most of them in your workshop. You will need to prepare the sheet metal to be used for the top cut, or you can cut it yourself using an oxyacetylene torch or plasma cutter. Once you have sized your welding table, you will also need a band saw, grinder, jig, hammer, square, level and of course your welding machine. Consider picking up some magnets or clamps for this project, we've found them to be helpful for almost every project!
Before cutting or welding any metal parts, you will first need to determine the size of the welding table you are going to build. How much space you will need to work with around the welding table and the type of welding work you will be using it for; figuring all of this out before you start will make the whole building process much easier. Your welding table should include a table top made of carbon steel at least 3/8" thick, and legs made of angle iron, U-channel steel, square tubing or pipe. It is important to remember when building a welding table that all metals used are of the same type to ensure that the table is strong and uniform.
Once you have determined the dimensions of the welding table, the next step is to cut the top. You should lay out the cuts in the sheet metal and leave 1/8" on the length and width cuts to allow for fine grinding. Before making any cuts you should remove all flammable material from the work area. Raise the piece of metal to be cut to the top and cut using an oxyacetylene torch or plasma cutter. Once the cutting is complete, you will need to use a hammer to remove any slag. To do this, you can tap the cutting end of the table with a hammer and any residual slag will come off easily. Once all the slag has been removed, you will need to sand the edges to smooth out any rough areas on the cutting edge.
The next step is to determine how many legs you will need for your welding table. This can be determined by the thickness of the table top and the overall size of the table. If you are using a 3/8" table top, the distance between the support legs should be no more than six feet. In this step you will also need to determine the comfortable working height of the welding table. Remember that the cut length of the legs will be the finished height minus the thickness of the table top. You will now need to cut the appropriate number of legs required and ensure that both ends of the legs are square. After arranging the legs in place on the table top and placing all the legs in their proper position, you can now start welding them to the table top.
You may find that you need some support pieces that attach to the legs somewhere under the table and act as brackets to keep the legs square. These pieces of metal can be welded to each leg of the table for added strength and support. You can add a shelf underneath the table and use it as a support for the table legs, combining the shelves into one. A shelf welded to the underside of the table will give you much needed storage space to keep your welding tools and equipment nearby while you work.
There is no limit to the number of accessories you can add to your welding table. Some of these accessories that you may want to consider adding to your welding table are metal pieces that can be used to ground the welder to the table. Placing multiple pieces of metal along the table will also allow you to move the welder around the table and still be able to ground it properly. There can be some danger in using the welding table as a floor when welding workpieces on the table.
